South India 1 Fanam of Dutch East India Company 1785-1792 Nagapatnam mint Gold Coin

These coins were minted from 1785-1792 – making them well over 200 years old. The obverse of the coin has a degenerated figure of Goddess Kali, while the reverse has the words ‘Rama Raya’ in devnagari script.  At 0.34 grams, this is one of the smallest coins to have been issued anywhere. 

Set up in 1602, the Dutch East India Company was the largest ever corporation – bigger than companies such as Apple and Amazon of modern day. Eventually, the Dutch colonial empire was eclipsed by other European powers and the Dutch East India Company (VOC) faded away.
