The beautiful temple seen on the 1000 rupee note is the Brihadeeswarar Temple. It is also known as Tanjore Temple. It is one of the largest temples in India and is an example of Dravidian architecture during the Chola period. Built by Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010, the temple was 1000 years old. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as “Great Living Chola Temples”.

This 1000 rupee note featuring the Tanjore Temple was issued in 1954. The obverse features the Reserve Bank/Of India in two lines above the words ‘Guaranteed by the Central Government’; Signed by the Governor “For The Reserve Bank of India”; Ashoka pillar in right window; Serial number upper right and lower left; “Thousand/Rupee” and “Ek Hazaar/Rupaya” in Hindi in central panel of denominations; ‘1000’ top left; “Ek/Hazaar/Rupaya” in Hindi lower left; ‘One/Thousand/Rupees’ lower right; Issue circle below promissory text in center; “1000” in the lower central area of the note; Tiny ‘Bharat’ in Hindi below watermark window and Ashoka pillar window; Multicolored microprint in all edges.

The reverse bears the words “Reserve Bank Of India” in the center above the vignette; Languages panel in the left window; RBI seal at bottom center; ‘1000’ in upper corners; “Ek Hazaar Rupaya” in Hindi below left window; “One thousand rupees” below the watermark window.
