What you will find here

Copper pice and quarter annas, silver two annas, quarter, half and one rupee, and the later nickel and cupro-nickel issues. Four monarchs appear across the run - Victoria as Queen and later as Empress, Edward VII, George V and George VI - and the portrait is usually the quickest way to place a coin you cannot read.

The mint mark decides more than the date

The same year from a different mint can be common or scarce. Look under the year on the reverse: a small diamond or dot for Bombay, an incuse dot for Calcutta, a heart for Lahore. No mark at all is usually Calcutta. A date on its own does not identify a British India coin.

Silver, and what happened to it

The silver rupee ran at .917 fine into the 1930s, dropped to .500 during the Second World War, and gave way to nickel afterwards. Weight and ring are the practical tells, and both are visible in a listing that states them.
