Most advice on this subject is written by people with nothing to show. What follows comes from 97,778 completed sales — what buyers actually paid, not what a seller hoped for.
What decides the price
Four things, in order of how much they move the number:
- The serial number, on notes. 786, solid repeats, very low numbers, ladders and birthday dates. This is the single biggest factor and it dwarfs the others.
- Condition. Uncirculated and crisp is worth a multiple of the same item with folds, soft corners or wear on the high points.
- Whether it is intact. A sealed bundle of consecutive notes is worth more than the same notes loose.
- Year, mint and issue. Two coins of the same denomination from different mints are different objects with different prices.

Read the typical column, not the top one. The median is what an ordinary example of that category sells for. The top decile is where the sealed bundles, fancy serials and graded pieces sit.
Before you list anything
- Do not clean it. Cleaning a coin removes original surface and is the fastest way to destroy its value. Collectors can always tell.
- Photograph both sides in daylight, flat, in focus, with the serial number readable. Poor photographs cost more sales than poor coins do.
- Check the mint mark under the year before you compare against any price you have seen online.
- Keep bundles intact. Splitting a sealed pack to sell singles usually reduces the total.
What to expect, honestly
Age alone decides very little. Plenty of seventy-year-old coins are worth a few rupees, and some pieces from the 1990s are worth thousands. A catalogue value is a reference for a given grade, not a promise of what a specific item will fetch.
If your item has none of the four factors above, the honest expectation is the median column — real money, well above face value, but not the figures in viral videos.
