This is an exceptional piece of numismatic history—a Portuguese India ½ Tanga coin minted in 1903 during the reign of King Charles I (Carlos I). Struck at the prestigious Lisboa mint, this standard circulation coin represents a fascinating chapter in colonial coinage from the Portuguese Indian territories.
The ½ Tanga, valued at 6 Réis (1/32 of the Rupia currency system), was minted between 1901-1903 and serves as a tangible artifact of early 20th-century Portuguese colonial administration in India. This particular 1903 issue is notably scarce, making it highly desirable among serious numismatists and historical collectors worldwide.
What makes this coin particularly compelling is its rarity and historical significance. Portuguese India coinage from this era is increasingly difficult to locate in quality condition, especially from the Lisboa mint. The coin represents the final years of Charles I's reign before his assassination in 1908, adding poignant historical context to this small but mighty collectible.
Ideal for collectors focused on colonial currencies, Portuguese history, or world numismatics, this piece offers both aesthetic appeal and investment potential. Its scarcity, combined with growing international interest in obscure world coins, positions it as a worthwhile addition to any serious collection.
