This exceptional copper legal dirham represents a remarkable piece of medieval Indian numismatic history from the Delhi Sultanate’s Tughluq Dynasty. Minted during Muhammad Bin Tughluq’s reign (1325-1351 AD / AH 725-752), this coin was struck at the prestigious Daulatabad mint, a major monetary center of the era. The obverse bears the inscription “duriba al-dirham shar’i fi zaman al-‘abd muhmmad bin tughluq” (struck as legal dirham during the time of slave Muhammad bin Tughluq), while the reverse displays “hadrat Daulatabad” with the date inscribed in written form.

Weighing 5.38 grams and measuring 14.83mm in diameter, this copper dirham showcases the sophisticated monetary reforms introduced during Muhammad Bin Tughluq’s innovative reign.
