This is a 1979 German 5 Deutsche Mark commemorative silver coin issued by the Federal Republic of Germany to honor the 150th anniversary of the German Archaeological Institute. Struck in .625 fine silver with copper (11.2g total weight), this non-circulating coin features classic milled edge craftsmanship and medal alignment striking at 29mm diameter. As a commemorative issue from the late Deutsche Mark era, this coin represents an important piece of German numismatic history before the 2001 transition to the Euro. The Archaeological Institute commemorative theme adds historical and cultural significance, making it particularly appealing to collectors interested in German heritage and institutional milestones. Collectors value this piece for its authentic silver content, low mintage as a commemorative issue, and its representation of a significant German cultural institution. The coin's original specifications and condition make it a worthwhile addition to German coin collections, Cold War-era numismatics, or specialized commemorative collections. Its numismatic pedigree and precious metal composition provide both collecting satisfaction and inherent value. #
