Obverse:
- Crowned bust facing right of the king, with a star on the left.
- A star inside a crescent is depicted on the right.
- Crescent symbols with stars are positioned at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock in the outer margin.
Reverse:
- A fire altar is depicted with two attendants on either side, wearing crescent headdresses.
- The mint, AM (Amol), is inscribed on the right side in Pahlavi script.
- The regnal year 6 (Sita) is also indicated on the reverse.
History:
- Amol was one of the most significant and ancient towns of the Sasanian Empire, serving as the capital of Tabaristan (Mazandaran).
- Despite the Arab conquest, Amol preserved its independence under Ispehbeds, or independent princes of the Zoroastrian faith.
- Khusro II’s coins were the last to bear the mint name Amol, marking the end of an era in Sasanian coinage.
