Description

Embark on a journey through ancient Persia with this remarkable Silver Drachm from the Sasanian Dynasty, featuring the reign of Khusro II (590-628 CE). Weighing 4.28 grams and measuring 30.95mm in diameter, this coin is a testament to the opulence and power of the Sasanian Empire. Minted in AM (Amol) during the regnal year 6 (Sita), this coin showcases intricate details on both the obverse and reverse, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the era.

Obverse:

  • Crowned bust facing right of the king, with a star on the left.
  • A star inside a crescent is depicted on the right.
  • Crescent symbols with stars are positioned at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock in the outer margin.

Reverse:

  • A fire altar is depicted with two attendants on either side, wearing crescent headdresses.
  • The mint, AM (Amol), is inscribed on the right side in Pahlavi script.
  • The regnal year 6 (Sita) is also indicated on the reverse.

History:

  • Amol was one of the most significant and ancient towns of the Sasanian Empire, serving as the capital of Tabaristan (Mazandaran).
  • Despite the Arab conquest, Amol preserved its independence under Ispehbeds, or independent princes of the Zoroastrian faith.
  • Khusro II’s coins were the last to bear the mint name Amol, marking the end of an era in Sasanian coinage.

Key Features:

  • Dynasty: Sasanian
  • Ruler: Khusro II
  • Material: Silver
  • Mint: AM (Amol)
  • Regnal Year: 6 (Sita)
  • Very fine condition, very scarce
