Abkhazia, officially the Republic of Abkhazia, is a partially recognised state in the South Caucasus, on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, at the intersection of Eastern Europe and West Asia. It covers 8,665 square kilometres and has a population of around 245,000. Its capital and largest city is Sukhumi.

Dioscorea is a genus of flowering plants that includes yams, a starchy tuber crop widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The genus is quite diverse, with over 600 species, and is known for its nutritional and medicinal uses. Different Dioscorea species are commonly called yams and are a major food source for millions of people.
