Britain ruled Canada from 1763 after the Seven Years’ War, until 1982, when the Canada Act ended the last of Britain’s constitutional authority. While Canada achieved domestic self-government in 1867, its legal and constitutional ties to the United Kingdom gradually loosened over the next century, with 1867 marking the formation of the Dominion of Canada, and 1982 marking its complete independence.
