Description

A Republic India one rupee coin of 2009 from the "thumbs up" definitive series, set aside by the seller because it left the mint wrongly struck. The design is shifted towards the bottom of the blank, so the rim never formed along the lower edge and a crescent of flat, unstruck metal is left in its place - at the lower left on the obverse and at the matching lower right on the reverse.

  • Off-centre or shifting strike of roughly 8-12 per cent towards the bottom of the flan.
  • Lower rim missing between about 5 and 7 o'clock on the obverse, with the date "२००९" crowded against the edge.
  • Reverse shows the same fault opposite: weak lower thumb and no rim at the lower right.
  • Flan slightly out of round, with a flattened lip of extra metal at the lower left.
  • Denomination one rupee, dated 2009; mint mark area falls in the unstruck zone and cannot be read.
  • Ferritic stainless steel, measuring about 26.1 mm across.
  • Condition Fine, with honest circulation wear and hairlines on both faces.
  • Mint: Calcutta Mint

Discover a fascinating error coin from Republic India—a 2009 One Rupee piece struck in ferritic stainless steel at the historic Calcutta Mint. Part of the iconic "thumbs up" definitive series, this fascinating numismatic anomaly captivates enthusiasts due to its dramatic production flaw. Featuring an 8 to 12 percent off-centre strike, the design shifted during minting, leaving a distinctive crescent of unstruck metal and an unformed lower rim. The date, 2009, is tightly crowded against the edge, while the mint mark falls into the unstruck zone. Graded in Fine condition with honest circulation wear, this piece showcases the imperfect yet remarkable realities of modern mass-production coin minting. Error coins are notoriously difficult to quality-control, making genuine mint errors highly sought after by advanced numismatists looking to diversify their collections with striking irregularities. Secure this tangible piece of minting history and add a conversation-starting anomaly to your showcase today.
