वर्ष 1996 में, दूसरी अंतर्राष्ट्रीय फसल विज्ञान कांग्रेस 17 से 24 नवंबर तक नई दिल्ली में ‘फसल उत्पादकता और स्थिरता’ की थीम के साथ आयोजित की गई थी। अंतर्राष्ट्रीय फसल विज्ञान कांग्रेस पहली बार वर्ष 1992 में आयोजित की गई थी, यह एम्स लोवा में आयोजित की गई थी। यह तय किया गया था कि यह दुनिया भर के विभिन्न स्थानों पर हर चार साल में एक बार आयोजित किया जाएगा। हर साल यह आयोजन एक अलग विषय के साथ होता है, जो अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों पर केंद्रित होता है, दुनिया भर के वैज्ञानिक और विद्वान इसमें भाग लेते हैं। इस आयोजन का जश्न मनाने के लिए भारत सरकार ने ‘अंतर्राष्ट्रीय फसल विज्ञान कांग्रेस’ की थीम के साथ यह 5 रुपये का स्मारक सिक्का जारी किया था।
