चित्तरंजन दास का जन्म 5 नवंबर, 1870 को बिक्रमपुर, ढाका (अब बांग्लादेश में) में हुआ था। वह एक प्रख्यात बंगाली वकील और भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में एक प्रमुख व्यक्ति थे। स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के लिए उन्होंने जो बलिदान दिया, उसके लिए उन्हें लोकप्रिय रूप से “देशबंधु” (देश का मित्र) कहा जाता था। उन्होंने 16 जून 1925 को अंतिम सांस ली।
यह 2 रुपये का सिक्का सामान्य प्रचलन के लिए उनकी स्मृति में जारी किया गया था। अन्य 3 सिक्के, 10 रुपये, 50 रुपये और 100 रुपये के मूल्यवर्ग में, अनियंत्रित / के रूप में जारी किए गए थे।
